Breakthrough in Solar Energy Storage: Hybrid Sustainable Batteries
In an exciting development, researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) have achieved a breakthrough in solar energy storage. Their innovation, a hybrid device, combines a silicon solar cell with Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage Systems (MOST). This advancement not only increases the efficiency of solar energy storage but also addresses the sustainability challenges associated with traditional batteries, such as overheating and reliance on scarce materials.

The MOST technology, based on carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen molecules, captures solar energy and stores it for up to 18 years, offering a clean and sustainable alternative to lithium-based storage. What makes this system even more efficient is its ability to cool photovoltaic cells by blocking photons that typically cause overheating. In lab tests, the device achieved a record 2.3% energy storage efficiency—doubling previous results.
With further development, this hybrid solar battery technology could be retrofitted to existing solar installations, enhancing their efficiency and sustainability. While still in the early stages, the researchers believe this innovation could significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels and help minimize the environmental footprint of energy storage systems.
