Hungary Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Network with New Funding Program
Hungary’s Ministry of Energy has announced a new grant program to fund the establishment of over 100 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country. Launched with an initial budget of HUF 28 billion, the program aims to accelerate Hungary’s transition to clean energy and support the growth of emission-free transport by doubling state support for e-mobility.
Supporting Green Energy and E-Mobility Expansion
The new initiative is focused on addressing gaps in the national EV chargingnetwork, especially in rural areas where such infrastructure is limited. The program allows EV charging station operators to apply for funding by May 2025, with loans available up to HUF 4 billion, requiring a minimum 10% self-contribution. This funding will support the setup of EV charging points that must be compatible with smart charging technology and electronic payment systems, enhancing convenience for EV users across Hungary.
State Funding to Boost Rural Infrastructure
State funding will cover between 35-65% of eligible costs, depending on the size of the business applying. For projects that include energy storage or renewable energy sources, non-repayable grants are available. This approach ensures that charging stations are not only accessible but also aligned with sustainability goals.
With this new program, the Ministry of Energy aims to improve accessibility in Hungary’s less-served areas, such as the Northeast and South Transdanubian regions, where participating businesses are set to establish charging stations in various towns, including Miskolc, Szeged, and Sopron. These stations will enhance convenience for EV users, making green, quiet transportation an attractive choice for more people.

Supporting Green Vehicle Purchases and Reducing Emissions
In addition to charging infrastructure, the government has allocated HUF 30 billion to support the purchase of electric passenger vehicles, vans, and minibuses. Eligible companies can receive up to HUF 4 million toward each vehicle purchase, depending on battery capacity. Since February, businesses have applied for funding for over 4,800 electric vehicles, with HUF 18.6 billion already allocated.
Hungary’s commitment to green energy doesn’t end with vehicle infrastructure; the government is also dedicated to promoting energy production and storage in homes, industrial sites, and vehicles. The new funding and incentives will help Hungary achieve broader green energy adoption, reduce transportation-related emissions, and pave the way for sustainable mobility nationwide.
