MOL Petrochemicals Boosts Renewable Energy with 48 MW Solar Park in Hungary
Hungary’s leading energy group, MOL, has announced a significant expansion of its renewable energy efforts with the development of a 48 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar park in Tiszaújváros. This state-of-the-art facility will not only contribute to Hungary’s clean energy goals but also enhance MOL’s energy independence and sustainability.
A Major Step Toward Energy Transition
The new solar park, strategically located adjacent to the MOL Petrochemicals industrial site, is built on a reclaimed slurry pond. Once operational, the plant will generate enough electricity to power approximately 28,000 households. It is expected to meet 5% of MOL Petrochemicals’ electricity needs, significantly reducing reliance on external power sources and cutting annual CO2 emissions by 17,000 tons.

By integrating renewable energy into its operations, MOL aims to enhance cost efficiency while supporting Hungary’s broader decarbonization efforts. According to Dr. György Bacsa, CEO of MOL Hungary, “The solar power plant in Tiszaújváros is an essential strategic step toward strengthening energy sovereignty and reducing our carbon footprint.”
MOL’s commitment to clean energy is evident in its track record:
- The company currently operates six solar parks with a combined capacity of 31.5 MW.
- It holds a 73.8% stake in ALTEO, managing renewable assets across wind, solar, water, and biogas plants, totalling 110 MW.
