SMA Launches Containerized MVPS-9200 Substation for Large-Scale BESS and Solar Projects
SMA Solar Technology has expanded its utility-scale portfolio with the European market launch of the MVPS-9200, a new containerized medium-voltage power station designed specifically for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) and utility-scale photovoltaic power plants.
The new solution reflects a growing demand for compact, high-power, and fully integrated infrastructure that simplifies project execution while improving long-term operational performance.
A Turnkey Medium-Voltage Solution in a Single Container
The MVPS-9200 is delivered in a 12-meter containerized format, integrating all key electrical components into one turnkey unit. Inside the container, SMA combines two high-performance inverters, two transformers, and a medium-voltage distribution system, effectively doubling power density within a single enclosure.
For EPC contractors and project developers, this approach significantly reduces design complexity, on-site installation time, and interface risks. Instead of coordinating multiple components and suppliers, the MVPS-9200 arrives as a factory-assembled solution ready for deployment in both solar and storage projects.
Optimized for Utility-Scale Solar and BESS
Designed for modern large-scale infrastructure, the MVPS-9200 supports 1500 V DC architectures, which have become standard for high-efficiency utility PV and BESS installations. Depending on the application, the system can be configured with:
-
Sunny Central Storage UP or UP-S inverters for battery energy storage systems
The Sunny Central UP-S variant leverages SiC-MOSFET technology, reducing conversion losses and improving overall system efficiency. This directly translates into lower operating costs and improved project economics over the system’s lifetime.
High Availability and Smarter Maintenance
A key advantage of the MVPS-9200 is its focus on operational resilience. The integrated medium-voltage switchgear features a four-field MV distribution design, allowing up to 50% of total system power to remain operational during maintenance activities. This capability is especially valuable for utility-scale plants where downtime has a direct financial impact.
The design also supports improved production scheduling and higher system availability, helping operators maintain stable output and predictable performance.
European Manufacturing and Strategic Partnerships
The MVPS-9200 is developed and manufactured in Europe, reinforcing SMA’s commitment to regional supply chains and quality standards. Its medium-voltage components are produced in collaboration with CEP, an Italian specialist in MV technology, combining SMA’s power electronics expertise with proven MV infrastructure know-how.
This partnership ensures the solution meets European grid requirements while maintaining flexibility for different project configurations and grid codes.
Built for the Next Generation of Utility Energy Systems
Available across multiple power classes—from MVPS-5860 up to MVPS-9200—the containerized MVPS platform is designed to scale alongside the rapid growth of both solar PV and grid-scale storage across Europe.
As battery energy storage becomes an integral part of renewable power plants, solutions like the MVPS-9200 highlight a broader industry shift toward integrated, high-density, and grid-ready infrastructure that reduces complexity while maximizing performance.
