Bulgaria to Boost Renewable Energy and Storage Capacity with 249 New Projects

Bulgaria has announced a significant investment in renewable energy through its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NPVU). This initiative, aimed at increasing renewable electricity production and enhancing energy storage infrastructure, will fund 249 projects with a total value of approximately 526 million Bulgarian lev (around 268 million euros). These projects are crucial for advancing Bulgaria’s goals in renewable energy and will bring nearly 3 GW of new clean energy capacity and 1.2 GW of storage to the grid, with completion targeted for March 31, 2026.

Two Major Calls for Proposal Drive Project Funding

The NPVU funding is organized into two calls for proposals, each targeting different project sizes and needs.

  1. Call 1 – For projects with installed capacities between 200 kW and 2 MW:
    • A total of 327 proposals were submitted, with 267 qualifying for ranking. Of these, 200 projects received funding, valued at about 107 million lev (approximately 54.7 million euros), adding 435 MW of renewable energy capacity and 176 MW of storage. An additional 67 projects are on a reserve list.
  2. Call 2 – For projects with installed capacities above 200 kW:
    • A total of 70 proposals were submitted, with 49 projects receiving funding valued at around 419 million lev (approximately 214 million euros), adding 2,660 MW of renewable capacity and 1,000 MW of energy storage.

This diverse range of funded projects highlights Bulgaria’s commitment to renewable energy expansion, with 3 GW of new renewable capacity and 1.2 GW of energy storage capacity expected to strengthen the national grid.

Supporting Bulgaria’s Energy Future

Bulgaria’s Energy Minister, Vladimir Malinov, emphasized the importance of these investments for meeting the goals of the EU’s Green Deal. According to Malinov, “Producing electricity from renewable sources, along with expanding storage capacity, is essential for achieving a low-carbon energy future.” These projects are set to reduce carbon emissions, improve grid stability, and integrate renewable energy more effectively into the power system. This commitment to decarbonized energy production also demonstrates strong investor confidence in Bulgaria’s sustainable energy sector.

Advantages of Renewable Energy Investments

By funding these renewable projects, Bulgaria is taking proactive steps to overcome critical challenges such as:

  • Grid Congestion: Expanding storage capacity will allow for better management of renewable energy, preventing overload and maintaining system reliability.
  • Power Balancing: With additional renewable energy and storage, the power system can be balanced more effectively, ensuring supply meets demand.
  • Market Stability: Increased clean energy production stabilizes the energy market, benefiting both consumers and the environment.
