Serbia Aims for 50% Renewable Electricity by 2030

Serbia is setting ambitious targets for renewable energy. According to Jovana Joksimović, Assistant Minister for International Cooperation, Serbia’s goal is to generate nearly half of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This plan, part of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, was discussed at the Climate Change Dialogue, organized in collaboration with the United Nations and UNDP.

Major Investments in Solar and Energy Storage

Serbia recently signed a contract to construct 1 GW of solar power plants along with 200 MW of battery storage. These projects will significantly alter the energy landscape, diversifying the energy mix of EPS, the national energy company. The plan is to add 3.5 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 through public and private investments, highlighting Serbia’s commitment to clean energy expansion.

Reducing the Impact of Thermal Power

While advancing renewables, Serbia is also investing in reducing emissions from its largest thermal power facilities. Notable projects include desulphurization plants at TPP Kostolac B and TENT A, valued at over 200 million euros. These projects place Serbia among Europe’s leaders in environmental upgrades, aimed at lowering harmful emissions and improving air quality.

Expanding Hydro Power Storage

Looking to the future, Serbia is preparing for the construction of the Bistrica Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant. Expected to commence next year, this project will play a key role in supporting renewable energy integration. Pumped storage hydropower can store excess energy generated by renewables, ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.

Considering Nuclear Energy for a Low-Carbon Future

In addition to renewables, Serbia is beginning discussions on nuclear energy as a potential low-carbon base load source for future energy needs. Joksimović emphasized the importance of securing energy supply beyond 2040, making nuclear energy an option worth considering in the long-term energy strategy.
