Google Signs 15-Year PPA for 49-MW Montpelier Solar Project to Power Ohio Data Centers
Google has taken another step toward carbon-free operations with the announcement of a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with TotalEnergies for energy generated by the 49-MW Montpelier Solar Farm in Ohio. The facility, now nearing completion, is connected to the PJM grid, supplying clean power that will support Google’s expanding data center operations across the state.

The agreement is part of Google’s broader strategy to match its electricity consumption with 24/7 carbon-free energy in every grid where it operates. By investing in new renewable capacity connected directly to local grids, Google aims to accelerate decarbonization while ensuring long-term, reliable energy supply for its advanced computing infrastructure.
TotalEnergies says the partnership highlights a growing trend: major cloud and AI operators seeking tailored, large-scale renewable solutions to meet rapidly rising energy needs. Data centers accounted for nearly 3% of global electricity demand in 2024, a number expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Stéphane Michel, President of Gas, Renewables & Power at TotalEnergies, noted:
“We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Google with this agreement to supply renewable electricity to their data centers in Ohio. This illustrates TotalEnergies’ ability to meet the growing energy demands of major tech companies by leveraging our integrated portfolio of renewable and flexible assets. It also contributes to achieving our target of 12% profitability in the power sector.”
The Montpelier project reinforces TotalEnergies’ strategy to support hyperscale and AI-driven facility operators, while helping Google advance its clean-energy commitments and lower the carbon footprint of its digital services.
